Exhuming Architecture

This is journey of an advanced architecture studio. The studio will explore the ungrounding, voiding, and disoccupation of the solid.

In architecture, voids are narrated and defined by the solid.
This studio is proposing the reverse approach to design by considering the exhumation of the solid with the void. The studio will programmatically exhume the solid space within the space of Enric Miralles and Carme Pinos' New Cemetery at Igualada.

The idea of exhuming solid space in a cemetery makes me nervous. There seems to be something immoral attached to the act of digging and reopening the ground where the dead are laid to rest. To add to this nervousness is the proposal to reevaluate the relationship between solid and void. I have, up to this point, been taught in studio to look at solid as a way of containing the void but have yet to examine the reverse relationship.

Both of these notions also offer new opportunities is design. This should be an exciting and frustrating semester.
